Abstract

Maintenance of hospital furniture is necessary for smooth functioning of hospital. An in-house repair facility in the form of mechanical workshop provides repair and maintenance in timely fashion. Keeping this concept in mind Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow, UP, developed a Central Mechanical Workshop (CMW) long back, the outcome of which were evaluated time and again.  Objectives: To find out the quantum of work done by CMW along with the cost-effectiveness and to determine the effectiveness and efficiency of the workshop in terms of user considerations. Methodology: A retrospective study for work load of CMW for a period from January 2013 to December 2013 was done. Data for workload and expenditure incurred was obtained from the in-charge CMW and finance departments. Users considerations were collected by distributing questionnaires with multifaceted consideration and cost-effectiveness was calculated by comparing the market cost of same number of quantum if could have repaired from the market. Result: Total 2,873  requisitions were received by CMW during study period, out of which 70% belonged to clinical and nursing, 20% general administration and 10% supportive services. Total expenditure incurred in repair and maintenance was calculated as Rs. 3294451.00. The CMW was found to be cost effective to the range of 25 % to 37% and most of the users were found to be satisfied with the time frame and quality of work carried out by CMW. Recommendation: large hospitals should have an in-house mechanical workshop for day to day repair and maintenance work.
